The Sustainable farming systems
Different authors have defined sustainable systems differently but in summary it simply boils down to as a process that can be maintained indefinitely without progressive decrease of important qualities inside or outside the system locality. Key characteristics point towards systems that are equitable among participants, flexible and resilient in nature, self-sufficient in terms of production factors, complimentary and integrated, efficient in nature and consistent in performance.
Several farming approaches with varying sustainable characteristics have been defined and advanced by different pioneers. Notably these include Permaculture, Ecological farming, Bio-dynamic farming, Agro-ecology and Organic agriculture among others.
According to Lampkin, one of the Organic Agriculture pioneers a sustainable farming system can be described as a system that is ecologically sound, economically viable and socially acceptable.
With above arguments and experiences it’s only logical for agricultural resilience to be fostered among farming communities especially in this age of climate change adversities sustainable approaches should be adopted.
